Project Update:

Avenue B Closure - Detour for Sanitary Sewer Bypass

Starting Wednesday 7.17.24, Contractor Sundt Construction is shifting over traffic lanes both east and westbound on McCullough Ave at the Avenue B intersection. There will continue to be two-way traffic on McCullough and open pedestrian crosswalks, and bike lanes will be open. Avenue B will be closed between 6th St. and McCullough Ave. The sanitary sewer bypass is anticipated to last 6 weeks, until the week of 8.26.24, weather permitting. A detour has been set up to divert drivers traveling southbound on Avenue B down 6th St, across Broadway, and up McCullough. See map provided. This work is associated with the South Alamo 2017 Bond Project, and its sewer bypass system is connected to the Avenue B & McCullough sewer manhole.

Current and planned work:

  • Continue excavation and installation of chilled water on S. Alamo between Nueva and Market St.
  • CPS Gas installation on the east side of South Alamo, to be preceded by storm drain installation and followed by SAWS water main and sanitary sewer installation.
  • CPS Electric installation work continues on the east side of South Alamo north of Nueva St.
  • South Alamo & Market SE Quadrant: This area is being converted for permanent pedestrian and traffic signal improvements, which closes one small traffic lane.
  • CPS Gas installation at the SE Quadrant of Cesar Chavez intersection. Traffic access will continue to be maintained at this intersection.
  • Arciniega Street continues to be closed for underground utility work.
  • Scheduled completion Summer 2025

South Alamo (Sewer Bypass Plan)

  • The contractor will restore the existing sanitary sewer pipes on S. Alamo in the upcoming month. In order to complete this work, a bypass will be necessary in upstream locations north of the project.
  • Starting as early Monday, July 8, 2024, the contractor will construct the sewer bypass beginning at Navarro, down Crockett St, then Alamo Plaza and through S. Alamo to La Villita. The restoration and need for the bypass is estimated to last 8 weeks. The bypass pipe will be positioned behind the edge of sidewalk and installed under driveways, cross-streets, sidewalk and ADA ramps at all crossings. There will continue to be one-way southbound travel through the S. Alamo corridor and two lanes available through Market St. at the S. Alamo intersection for ongoing utility and storm drain construction.

South Alamo One-Way Southbound Traffic

  • South Alamo has been converted to one single southbound traffic lane from March 18, 2024 thru end of project.
  • Pedestrian access on S. Alamo east side from Market to Cesar Chavez, and South Alamo west side from Nueva to La Villita St.
  • 4-way Stop at Nueva intersection has been implemented.
  • Business access provided.

Closure of NW Quadrant of Nueva & South Alamo Intersection

  • The NW Quadrant of Nueva & South Alamo Intersection closed March 18, 2024 to install chilled water and make a tie-in. Nueva is accessible to two-way traffic off Presa Street and will allow eastbound traffic to take a right turn onto South Alamo. No right turn onto Nueva will be permitted from South Alamo.
